Gus: I had another application called VoodooPad even before that, which was a desktop wiki. That’s how Acorn got started.Īlexis: Was Flying Meat kind of like a consultancy that you started out or did you start it for this kind of screenshot application? My users would send a request like they want layers or they want bitmap editing and I was like, “I’ll see if I can do that” and all of a sudden it turned into a whole new application. I had another application called FlySketch, which was used for taking screenshots and marking them up so you could draw little arrows and highlight text and stuff like that. Flying meat is named after a rock climb I’m an avid rock climber. The rest of it, it was all just self-taught.Īlexis: Yeah, for nowadays, it’s kids looking at GitHub instead of books.Īlexis: So which came first – this is a question that humanity has asked itself for a millennia – the flying meat or the acorn? That’s basically how I learned how to program –just copying programs out of books. They were little programming books with the program all written out and you would basically copy that into a new text file on your Apple IIc and eventually run it, find your errors. Gus: A long time ago, they used to publish little BASIC books. How did you learn to program? Did you get started with it or did it take a while and maybe several other computers before you dipped your toes in the pool of programming? It’s more about being able to push the pixels around fast.Īlexis: So you had your Apple computer back in the day. It’s also probably a lot less that you need to know for algorithms and stuff like that than you would think. It goes very deep, but it’s easy to get a good, broad overview of how to manage pixels, basically. Once you get into it, the algorithms for graphics aren’t too hard. There’s been a couple of things that I’ve hired people for, but for the most part, it’s all just me. Gus: It’s mostly I like to do all the work myself. How do you deal with that nowadays? Do you hire it out or do you go, “Damn it, I’m going to take this book and I’m going to absorb it and whether I learn by osmosis or otherwise, I’m going to figure it out”? I imagine when it comes to image editing and all these kinds of effects that you have to work with in Acorn, there’s a fair amount of algorithms involved. I hated Art History, but I had all those credits so I just turned it into a general studies degree that way.Īlexis: Now we’re getting ahead of ourselves here, or at least I am, because I’m curious – you mentioned not being very good at algorithms and that kind of stuff. The Art History happened because I was going to be an art major for a while, and you needed a lot of Art History credits. It wasn’t planned at all it just happened that way. That’s just two interests of mine that just sort of fell together. I wasn’t very good at algorithms and stuff like that, and actually the only class I ever flunked was a Computer Science class – go figure. That’s how I got the Computer Science stuff. I would create my own little Computer Science classes, which were basically projects I was working on at work anyway, and they would sign off on it and I would get credit for it. It’s the central IT department for the university and some of my co-workers were actually professors. I didn’t take very many hardcore Computer Science classes I actually worked for the Campus Computing – as it was called there. Computer science, I just kind of enjoyed too. So when I went to college, I just took a bunch of art classes just because it was fun I really enjoyed it. I was just playing games on it and I would write little basic programs, and I also liked drawing. I had an Apple IIc growing up it was my first computer. And I’m mostly just self-taught.Īlexis: Now why did you combine those three minors or your interests? Was it because, “Well it’s just what I’m interested in so it’s going to happen” or was it more of a calculated, “Well I think these could go well together,” like the Steve Jobs intersection of technology and liberal arts kind of thing? Add in the Computer Science and that’s what’s going to happen. So that’s sort of where my art background comes from when I do image editors and stuff like that. I basically studied Art, Art History and Computer Science and I took them all together and sort of made my own degree. I basically ended up getting a general studies degree by combining three minors together to get a single major. I went to college at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Having grown up in a rural community that produced its own food, I developed an abiding interest in agriculture and its methods. don’t tell Scripps that you are deeply invested in it.Ī hypothetical student may begin a specific response like this: A nice location, a strong Psychology program, small class sizes, etc. Avoid naming a really general feature common to all colleges.Empty flattery is vague and suggests that you don’t have anything specific to offer. Avoid writing effusive praise about the college.Avoid just name-dropping random professors’ names or programs you looked up without providing details and forming a personal connection. There are a few things you should try to avoid when creating your response. You want to show the admissions committee that you’re truly invested in Scripps, so do your research! You should aim for this level of specificity, rather than citing general aspects such as the school’s location, small courses, all-women setting. Or maybe you’ve always found knitting to be a stress relief, so you’re interested in the Babes and Blankets club to combine your passion for knitting with community service. If Scripps or its programs have values that parallel yours, mention that in your response!įor example, your passion for both the environment and public policy might draw you to the Environmental Analysis Program, a 5-college collaboration designed to prepare students for careers in many environmental problem-solving fields. Maybe you really value sustainability or diversity, or maybe you have strong religious beliefs. These are great ways to connect with college tangibly, but you should also seek to express an intangible connection. Other institutes, museums, or centers within the college.Particular school traditions or culture.Specific classes or academic opportunities. The more personal the connection, the better your response will be. You should strive to explicitly connect your goals to some aspect of the college. Finding programs or extracurriculars that pique your interest and catch your eye will make writing with specificity much easier. The prompt is asking why you have chosen this college, so it’s important to establish how Scripps will align with your personal academic and extracurricular interests. Explore the programs, student organizations, faculty, and institutes to find things that resonate with you. To begin thinking about what you’re going to write, you should do some research into the college if you haven’t already. There might be some similarity due to colleges’ competitive resources, but you want to ensure that your response is clearly tailored to Scripps. Before you begin writing, be sure to check out CollegeVine’s guide to writing the “Why This College?” essay for in-depth tips and examples! Also be careful not to copy and paste another essay you wrote for a different college and just change the name. It’s a very common, traditional essay archetype. With the Artboard tool, you can draw any shape supported by OmniGraffle around objects on your canvas the same way you would draw shapes with the shapes tool. Pro users can also take advantage of artboards in OmniGraffle 7. This is a big deal if you have other apps that have tools that you are more familiar with or prefer for asset creation, but want to bring artwork created with them into OmniGraffle to leverage features that are unique to it. If you have art assets created in other apps like Sketch, Acorn, or any other app that can export SVGs, OmniGraffle can now join your workflow as a destination app instead of just a starting point. The app previously added support for exporting your work as an SVG file, but now, you can also import SVG graphics, which means OmniGraffle can become part of whole new workflows. OmniGraffle 7 plays better with other graphics apps. With a canvas that can expand in all directions, OmniGraffle makes it easy to get started without having to resize the canvas later and shift your work around to fit new canvas boundaries. OmniGraffle comes in Standard and Pro versions with the Pro version adding several advanced tools. With Version 7 of OmniGraffle, The Omni Group plays to its strengths, further extending the power, adaptability, and ease of use of those tools in what adds up to an outstanding update. By giving users the ability to tweak virtually any property of a shape, line, or other graphic element on its canvas, OmniGraffle works equally well for prototyping an iPhone app as it does for laying out an addition to your house or creating a corporate organization chart. In contrast to the other three this game mode is not competitive. Each round is estimated to last a minute. The winner of the match is the player who reaches a set number of points or has the most points after a set number of rounds. Points are awarded each round for various achievements, such as reaching the goal first, or setting a successful trap. Players add obstacles designed to challenge their opponents, while also making sure they themselves can handle their handiwork. This mode allows players to compete for the fastest completion times in custom levels which have been uploaded. It’s also possible for the host to configure the amount of blocks a player can place (or move) per round in Creative mode. Already placed blocks may be moved instead of placing something new. The decision of what to pick is not absolute in this mode as players can go back and choose something else if they change their mind. If the round or time limit is reached before that, the player with the most points wins. The winner of the game is the one who manages to reach the point limit first. This process continues to repeat itself until a player wins the game or the time/round limit is reached. As soon as all contestants have reached the goal or died, points are distributed and the Party Box appears again. After placement is over, the characters appear and they are able to go through the level. In Party mode at the beginning of each round the so-called Party Box appears, containing several random blocks players can choose between and then place. Party Mode This is the default game mode. Once you have a good enough classifier, you can save it ( Save classifier) and apply it to many more images in batch ( Apply classifier). You can also control which image features are used for classification in the Settings dialog, which might help the classification. Unfortunately, on my first attempt the cell borders also trained as class 2, but with a bit more tuning perhaps that problem could be eliminated. And since the median lines are directional you could even compute angles for cell orientation, if that is useful for your analysis. Once you have the centers the problem of overlapping cells largely disappears. My idea was to isolate those median lines, since from them it is easier to find cell centers, and your cells are very regular in shape. I divided the image into four classes: background, the dark area in the center ("blob"), the cells themselves ("class 1") and the median line running through each cell ("class 2"). I played a bit with Trainable Weka Segmentation and got some potentially promising, but still-not-yet-good-enough, results: In your case, I would suggest giving the former a try.
